On the functions of Russian sentential parenthetical with kak

&nbsp;&nbsp;There are two kinds of main sentential parentheticals in Russian, i.e. sentential parenthetical with kak (ex. Ona priedet, kak on dumaet) and sentential parenthetical without any conjunctions (ex. Ona priedet, on dumaet). It has been believed that those two sentential parentheticals have no difference in meaning and use.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;However, Russian sentential parenthetical with kak is different from sentential parenthetical without conjunction, and the former has the unique semantic and pragmatic features, which the latter does not have.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;First of all, sentential parenthetical with kak can have a second phrasal stress, while sentential parenthetical without conjunction does not have any phrasal stress. Secondly, sentential parenthetical with kak, especially in the verbal form of the first person and the present tense, is preferable in the formal contexts. Thirdly, first-person, present-tense forms of some predicates are restricted or not actively used in the sentential parenthetical with kak. Fourthly, the speaker is closely connected to the proposition of the sentence containing sentential parenthetical with kak and he/she is not supposed to make an objection to it. Fifthly, sentential parenthetical with kak has smaller scope than the negation, while sentential parenthetical without conjunction has larger scope than the negation.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;These semantic and pragmatic features indicate that sentential parenthetical with kak has the presupposition that the subject believes that P and the implication that the speaker does not believe that the P is false. The speaker, therefore, has more confidence in the proposition of the sentence containing sentential parenthetical with kak than any other constructions.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Thus Russian sentential parenthetical with kak is different from sentential parenthetical without conjunction in many ways, and has some unique pragmatic functions.
