위계선형모형을 활용한 대학생의 강의평가 분석 - S대학교 교양강의를 중심으로

Multilevel Analysis of the Effects of Student and Course Characteristics on Student Course Evaluation - Focused on the Undergraduate Liberal Education Program -

  이 연구는 위계선형모형(HLM)을 활용하여 대학생들의 강의평가 결과를 분석한 것이다. 위계선형모형을 활용하여 대학생들의 강의평가에 대한 ‘학생수준’과 ‘강좌수준’ 변인들의 영향력을 분석하고, 각 수준에서 유의한 영향을 미치는 변인들을 탐색하였다. 선행연구분석 등을 통해 대학생들의 강의평가에 영향을 줄 것으로 예상되는 13개의 변인(① 학생수준 변인 7개: 성별, 학년, 전공, 수강동기, 강의참여도, 예상학점, 성취학점; ② 강좌수준변인 6개: 교수성별, 교수연령, 교수직급, 강좌의 학문계열, 강좌규모, 강좌유형)을 선정하였다. 분석 자료로는 S대학교에서 2006년에 실시한 교양과정 1,481개 강좌에 대한 57,216개의 강의평가 평정 자료를 활용하였다. 연구 결과, 대학생들의 강의평가 결과의 전체 분산(variance) 중 강좌간 차이로 인한 분산은 11.9%, 학생간 차이로 인한 분산은 88.1%로 ‘학생수준’의 영향력이 매우 큰 것으로 나타났다. 또한 13개 변인들이 모두 포함되었을 때 학생수준 분산의 22.0%, 강좌수준 분산의 65.8%, 전체 분산의 27.2%를 설명할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 분석에 포함된 변인 중 학생성별을 제외한 다른 12개 변인들은 대학생들의 강의평가에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 끝으로 대학생들의 강의평가에는 강좌 간의 차이보다 학생 간의 차이가 더 많이 반영되기 때문에, 학생들에 의한 강의평가 조사 결과를 교수(혹은 강사)의 강의의 질이나 교수역량(teaching competence)을 평가하기 위한 지표로 활용하는 데 신중해야 함을 논의하였다.

  The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of student and course characteristics on student course evaluation in undergraduate liberal courses using two-level hierarchical linear model (HLM). Based on literature reviews, 13 research variables were selected and specified as fixed effects in the analysis model. Data was 57,216 ratings of 1,481 undergraduate liberal courses at S University in 2006. The result of unconditional model revealed that student characteristics" effects on student course evaluation (within-course effects, 88.1%) had much larger than course characteristics" effects (between-courses effects, 11.9%). The result of conditional model specifying student and course level predictors revealed that 12 research variables (students" academic year, students" major, students" reason for taking the course, students" course participation, students" expected and achieved grade, faculty"s gender, faculty"s age, faculty"s status, academic field of the course, class size and course type) had statistically significant effects on student course evaluation. The explained variance was 22.0% in student level, 65.8% in course level, and 27.2% of the total variance.
