Head and Hair Decoration of the Ancient Silla Period

Head and hair decoration has been strongly related with fashion and human history. It is, however, rarely and insignificantly studied as a part of costume history. This study is focused on historical survey of head and hair decoration of the Ancient Silla period, Historical records about head hair decoration of the period are reviewed, in addition to that historical references include human clay figures, wall paintings and illustrations, Wang-hwae-do(王會圖) and Bun-gaek-yeeb-jo-do(蕃客入朝圖), produced during the Ancient Silla period are discussed.<BR> In conclusion of this research, characteristics of head and hair decoration of the Ancient Silla period are as follows:<BR> 1. Forms of men"s hair style are classified as a topknot style, a twin topknot style(up and down) and a natural loose style during the period.<BR> 2. Five types of men"s head gears are classified. The first is a triangle-shaped cap which is variously enjoyed by different shape of the top-point of the triangle. The second is a decorated cap with feathers. The third is a triangle shaped hat with brim. The fourth is a hair band style made with fabric strip. The final style is a special head gear attached with a front piece on the body part of the cap and the entire boarder is sewn with different colored fabric to secure the edges and to decorate the cap.<BR> 3. Females of th period decorated their hair in four ways. The first is a chignon style, called book-gae in historical records. The second is a twin topknot style. The third is a loose hair style, and the fourth is up-style with braided hair which is decorated with pears and various colored silk fabrics, called jahb-chae(雜綵). Cap or hat is rarely worn, although hair-band style is found from the human clay artifacts.<BR> 4. Accoring to the historical records, various chae textile, special silk textile, once used for women"s hair decoration, such as geum-chae(錦綵), neung-chae(綾綵), ra-chae(羅綵), chae-dahn(綵斷), jahb-chae(雜綵) is manufactured.
