Introduction and Development of Korean Women’s Basketball

  이 연구는 한국 여자농구의 도입과 전개양상을 알아보기 위해 사회문화적 배경을 고찰하였고 이러한 배경 속에서 나타난 시대적 특징을 기준으로 시대구분을 태동단계, 성장단계, 중흥단계, 프로와 아마의 양립단계로 나누어 보았다. 이에 여자농구의 발전과정에서 나타난 여자농구의 의의를 총체적으로 파악하고 여자농구의 전망과 과제를 모색하는데 그 목적을 두고 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫번째는 한국 여자농구의 세계화를 이룩하는 것이 과제이며, 둘째는 학교농구의 저변확대와 셋째, 전문 지도자의 육성이 급선무라 사료된다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;This study examines the introduction and development process of women’s basketball in Korea and aims to explore a prospect of women’s basketball and present future issues. The followings are the findings of this study.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;First, in the naissance period (1911-1955) when there had been no women’s sports, Second, the growth period (1956-1966) began with the creation of the Bank of Korea women’s basketball team in 1956. Until the 1970s, active creations of industrial women’s basketball teams became a foundation for the development of Korea Women’s Basketball. Owing to this, Korean women’s basketball team was able to make excellent results in an international game. Third, during the restoration period (1967-1997), Korean women’s professional team became the second winner in the fifth World Women’s Basketball Championship and this kind of achievements in international games instilled national pride into Korean citizens. Also, the Grand Basketball Festival made basketball, which had been stagnated for a while, settled as one of the indoor winter sports in the 1980s and presented an opportunity to lay the foundation for the restoration of basketball.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Fourth, in the 1990s of the professional-amateur coexistence period (1998-present), Korea Women’s basketball attempted a new change to be converted to professional league as a way to meet the needs of the times and to be reborn as national sports. Also, the re-creation of industrial teams that have been the driving force for amateurs became the base of Korean women’s basketball and opened up a post-graduation path for women high-school basketball players, presenting a direction for a further development of Korea Women’s Basketball. After exploring a prospect of Korea Women’s Basketball based on the findings, the followings were proposed as future issues.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The first issue is to accomplish the globalization of women’s basketball.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The second issue is to expand the base of school basketball leagues.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The third one is to cultivate professional leaders.
