The purpose of this study is to research the effect of arbitration through small group play program on the improvement of language ability of mentally retarded children. The subjects of this study were three children whose chronological age were 5 to 6 and slightly mentally retarded ones whose I.Q. by K-WIPPSI were measured between 65 and 75 and sociality index was below average and there was no problem in emotion and hearing ability. Basic pre-test was executed twice a week before starting therapy and 18 times, once a period, twice a week in the course of therapy, and two maintenance-tests were executed once a week after the end of the therapy.<BR> The results of this study are as follows :<BR> First, it showed that speech therapy arbitration using small group play program brought about the improvement of objective mention among language ability of all the subjects. It appeared that the proportion to the item of objective mention of all the subject was in the order of cognition/description, request, event/situation, skill and characteristics.<BR> Second, it showed that speech therapy arbitration using small group play program brought about the improvement of subjective statement among language ability of all the subjects. It appeared that the proportion to the item of subjective statement of all the subject was in the order of internal condition, insistence, valuation, rule and attribute.<BR> The results of this study support the idea that arbitration of language ability through small group play program is an effective way of improving language ability of slightly mentally retarded children.
