올림픽메달 결정 요인 연구 - 종교변수 중심으로

The Determinants of the Olympic Medals : The Review of Religious Variables

  본 연구는 올림픽메달 결정요인으로 종교를 검토하였다. 종속변수는 메달색깔에 따라 가중치를 둔 점수를 이용 하고 설명변수는 양적변수로 수확체감을 반영한 총인구, GDP를, 질적 변수로 종교변수(카톨릭, 신교, 정교, 이슬람, 불교, 힌두)를 더미 번수로 설정하여 OLS로 회귀 분석하였다. 총인구와 GDP 모두 결정요인으로 통계적 유의성이 있었으나 GDP는 더욱 유의적이었다. GDP의 중요성을 감안하면 소득이 가장 높은 개신교 국가그룹의 회귀계수가 가장 높게 나타날 것으로 예상되었지만 측정결과는 정교국가그룹이 가장 높게 나타났다. 이러한 원인은 정교국가그룹들이 스포츠 강국인 구 공산주의 국가를 많이 포함하였고 공산주의 문화의 영향으로 여성참여문화가 발달하여 여성메달 점유비율이 높은 것을 중요한 요인으로 분석하였다. 총인구, GDP의 수확체감 반영은 설명력 및 예측력을 높이고 종교변수는 종교뿐만 아니라 사회체제나 지역성을 대변할 수 있는 변수로서 의미가 있었다.

  This study investigates the determinants of the Olympic medals by using OLS. Dependent variables are the points of the Olympic medals depending on medal colors, independent variables are total population, GDP reflected DRS as quantitative variables and Catholicism, Protestantism, Orthodoxy, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism as dummy variables. Total population and GDP were statistic significant variables, GDP was much more significant than total population. Considering the importance of GDP, the richest Protestantism countries were likely to be the highest regression coefficient, but Orthodoxy countries showed the highest significancy. The causes of these results were that Orthodoxy group conclude many old communism countries obtaining excellent outcomes in sports, have many women medalist by the culture of developed woman participation. Owing to total population, GDP reflected DRS, forecasting power & explanation power came to high. Religious variables also showed good explanation power to present political system, regional characteristic as well as religion.
