An Analysis of Vocabulary Teaching in High Schools and the Effect of Different Vocabulary Teaching Methods

  The purposes of this study are, first, to investigate how vocabulary is presented and taught in textbooks and high schools, and second, to measure the effectiveness of different vocabulary teaching methods. Three high school textbooks were analyzed in terms of activity types. Then a questionnaire survey was administered to 47teachers and 200 students. To assess the effectiveness of different vocabulary teaching methods, 40 target vocabulary were taught to 19 high schools students using different vocabulary methods. Textbook analysis shows that there are shortcomings in the amount and variety of vocabulary activities. The survey results show that the teachers and students prefer certain vocabulary teaching or learning methods though some teachers realize that they have to include various kinds of methods in their teaching. The test results after teaching target vocabulary show that the method of using semantic field was the most effective for the comprehension test, however, for the use oriented vocabulary test, traditional method proved to be more effective. These results suggest that vocabulary teaching should receive more attention and the students should be given more opportunity to be exposed to various kinds of vocabulary learning techniques and learn to use them.
