Transformational Leadership Practices of New York State Charter School Principals

&nbsp;&nbsp;본 연구는 미국 뉴욕주 차터수를 교장들의 변혁적 리더십의 실제를 탐구하는데 목적을 두었다. 본 연구 대상의 전집은 뉴욕주 차터스쿨의 교장 61명이며, 표집은 그들 중 44명이다. 교장의자가 인식적 5가지 리더십을 평가하기 위해 ‘리더십 실제 검사지(LPI)’가 사용되었고, 교장들의 현황을 파악하키 위한 설문지가 고안되어 사용되었다. 본 연구를 위해 3가지의 연구문제가 설정되었으며, 10가지의 영가설이 통계적 유의확율 p=0.05로 검증되었다.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 백분위를 이용한 통계 자료를 통해서 보면 뉴욕주 차터스쿨 교장들이 5가지 변혁적 리더십의 모든 행동 부분에서 전체 리더 그룹보다 우위에 있다는 것을 알 수 있고, 특히 ‘공통의 비전을 고취시켜라’는 리더쉽 행동이 그 중에서도 가장 탁월하다는 것이 발견되었다. 둘째, 일반적으로 차터스쿨 교장의 리더십 실제와 예언변인인 성별, 연령, 인종, 교육의 정도 사이에는 통계적 관계성이 없었다. 셋째, 예언변인 중에서 교장들의 학교 설립자로서의 위상, 현직에 시무하는 기간, 학교장으로서 주당 일하는 시간 등은 차터스쿨 교장들의 리더십 실제와 관계성이 없었다. 그러나 ‘현직에 시무하기 전 학교장으로서의 경험’의 예언변인은 ‘공통의 비전을 고취시켜라’는 변혁적 리더십 행동과 밀접한 관계가 있었다. 즉 뉴욕주 차터스쿨교장 중에서 학교장으로서 선험적 경험이 있는 교장들이 더욱 빈번히 이 변혁적 리더십 행동을 실행했다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;The purpose of this study was to investigate transformational leadership practices of New York State charter school principals and find its lessons.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The data generating sample consisted of 44 charter school principals in New York State. The LPI-S was employed to collect self-perceived principal leadership data in five domains. In addition, a questionnaire was used to collect principals’ demographic data. Three research questions were asked in this study and 10 corresponding hypotheses were tested for significance at the .05 level. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression were employed to analyze the data.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The results of the study indicated that the transformational leadership practices of charter school principals in New York State were in the moderate to high categories when compared to a normative database of LPI scores. The gap between this sample of charter school principals and the national sample was the greatest for Inspiring a Shared Vision leadership practice. Also, this study suggested that there were no statistically significant relationships between the leadership practices of charter school principals and the demographic variables of: gender, age, ethnicity, and level of education of principals. The research, however, found a significant relationship between the Inspiring a Shared Vision leadership practice of New York State charter school principals and prior experience as a school principal.
