This paper analyzes Baek-seok"s poetries focused on the various poetic dictions that have shamanistic features and finds out how those poetic dictions contribute on realizing ecological characteristics. Ultimately, the purpose of this study is to show that Baek-seok"s view of the world represents the union and coexistence of mankind and nature.
This study based on the view of eco-literature not only enables to reflect on mankind and society but also contributes for the text to be endowed with the proper status of the age. Also, it has the calling of the present generation to consider the ultimate relationship between human-being and nature.
The results that are deduced through the analysis on the symbolic meaning of shamanistic subject matters such as water and urine, red-beans and exorcism, sorceresses and ghosts in Baek-seok"s texts follow.
Firstly, this study finds out that Baek-seok isn"t perverse and disorderly on the cause of the disease and he doesn"t ordain the illness as modernistic symptom in his texts that describe sick human-being. Consequently, it is reasonable for a disease to be understanded as the meaning of a personal sickness. And the cure of a disease should be interpreted as a process that restores the abnormal body mechanism to the normal state. In other words, unnaturalness turns to naturalness.
Secondly, ecological and shamanistic subject matters such as water and urine, and red-beans and exorcism are intermediaries that help people reach to the world of coexistence over individuality as well as elements that function as treatments for cure. The exorcism is an act for cure and sorceresses reform a person"s destructed psychological or physical disorders.
Thirdly, ghosts in Baek-seok"s texts are not the subject to be afraid but to coexist with mankind in the same space of life. Therefore, shamanism and eco-literature have the interrelationship in the point of view that God assigns each person obligations and mankind must follow God.
It is impossible to affirm that Baek-seok created poetries with the ecological intention. However, when the researchers suppose to interpret and provide new meaning to the texts following the view of present age, his works can be understood to have enough ecological features and evaluated as an living texts. Furthermore, reading Baek-seok"s poetries based on the ecological imagination, eco-literature can be evaluated not the field that appears abruptly and discussed in 1990s, but the field that has a possibility the origin of this current stream is from 1930s" works.
