Pre-service teachers generally take English teaching practicum in their senior year at teachers college, and it is assumed that they successfully apply their knowledge of teaching theories and skills to classroom English teaching. However, very little has been known about to what extent pre-service teachers change their perception of teaching English during their teaching practicum. This paper reports on the effects of the English teaching practicum which pre-service teachers take at elementary schools. It focuses on examining how pre-service teachers change their perception of teaching English and English teaching methods. To this end, 63 pre-service teachers who had taught English at elementary schools during their practicum were selected and asked to complete a questionnaire designed to investigate their perception of English teaching methods and several related issues. The analysis of the questionnaire data revealed that the subjects, after completing their practicum, became more confident about their English teaching skills and formed more positive attitudes toward English teaching (p<.05). However, the data did not show any substantial change in their perception of English teaching methods (p>.05). The data analysis suggests that the method courses at teachers college should be closely based on studentteachers practicum experiences.
