The purpose of this study is to analyse hedge expressions in the National Curriculum and English primary and secondary textbooks. In order to achieve this purpose, the definition and the examples of hedge expressions are reviewed in terms of lexicon and syntactic structure. This study includes the analysis of primary and secondary textbooks written by guidance of the National Curriculum. The results reveal that hedge expressions based on the level of learners were not used adequately in Basic Communicative Function, Vocabulary List, and Linguistic Form of the curriculum. It is also shown that the hedge expressions of the textbooks written considering the National Curriculum were used partially in dialogues and reading materials. As far as hedging is concerned, learners ought to be conscious of the fact that it is not only acceptable but sometimes quite necessary for successful communication that speakers express themselves vaguely rather than directly, and that this applies both to their native language and to foreign languages. Thus, in this paper, it is proposed that the National Curriculum should include a variety of hedge expressions in Basic Communicative Function, Vocabulary List, and Linguistic Form, and the textbooks should use the hedge expressions considering the level of learners.
