In this paper I claim that the NP accompanied with the morpheme -man (only) in the so-called intervention data should be analyzed as a topic on the basis of the fact that the grammaticality of the sentences referred to as intervention effects is determined depending on the situations where they are uttered. In order to support this claim I show that the sentences with an NP-man phrase have the same syntactic structure as those with an NP-nun phrase. However, I argue that they are different in the semantic interpretation in terms of contrastive topic, entailment, and focus assignment.
