This paper argues against incorporation accounts of verbal noun constructions and proposes an analysis without making recourse to incorporation. The incorporation approach cannot avoid several non-trivial problems, thereby necessitating an alternative account which dispenses with incorporation. Verbal nouns take a derived nominal structure as well as a gerund structure. Also, verbal nouns turn out to be verbs, not nouns, and the insertion of the dummy verb hata "do" is triggered by a prosody reason at PF.
