What determines the prosodic structure?

What determines the prosodic structure?

This paper explores the syntax-phonology interface with respect to prosodic structures. The prosodic structure for wh-interrogatives in Kyungsang Korean exhibits different characteristics from the other dialects of Korean. Some of the wh-phrases do not receive the highest pitch, which is against the traditional assumption that a wh-phrase is an inherently focused element at the phonological component. This fact indicates that it is not the wh-phrase that determines the prosodic structure, but it is the operator that determines the prosodic structure. One of the consequences of this approach is that the operator-variable relation must be available for generating the prosodic structure at some level of PF. Following Seidl"s (2001) approach, which there are two levels of representation at PF, the operator-variable relation is interpreted at PF.
