Henna extract had been used as a natural coloring material in India for a long time, and the rate of usage has been increased with the various mordanting agents and coloring methods. This study is to investigate the damaged degree of hairs treated with synthetic dye, and henna dye and the effect of the mordanting agents on hair dye with henna.<BR> The intensity was significantly increased in synthetic dyed group compared with henna dyed group and the extensity was significantly decreased in synthetic dyed group than henna dyed group. In micrography findings, synthetic dyed group showed the departed cuticles and the severe damaged cuticles. We used NaCl, ACOOH, Kal(SO4)212H2O, CuO, FeO and K2CO3 as mordanting agents in our experiment. In henna dye, Kal(SO4)212H2O and FeO treated groups showed the intendancy with the increased intensity and the decreased extensity, and a little damaged hair cuticles in micrography findings compared with no mordanting agent treated group. In conclusion, synthetic dye compared with henna dye caused the severe damaged hairs, and Kal(SO4)212H2O and FeO of mordanting agents compared with others on henna dye showed a little damaged hair cuticles.
