Korean College students" Perceptions of Language and Culture in a Video-supported English Listening Class

  This study explored Korean college students" perceptions of target language and culture while learning English as a second language in a video-supported EFL listening class. Qualitative methodology was used in this study, and data were collected for two semesters through a questionnaire, interviews, and observations. The video-supported language class played an important role to facilitate the culture learning and motivated the students to learn language. The study revealed that the students recognized cultural differences and gained cultural awareness through the contents in the listening class. In terms of language development, the students developed their listening using and speaking skills. In addition, they learned more authentic expressions and gained confidence in communicating with native speakers. Through collaborative group work and mini drama in the class, they had critical thinking concerning the cultural practice of both target language culture and their native culture. The present study shows that integrating authentic cultural knowledge into listening class is an effective method for EFL learners to have correct interpretation of language.
