Suggestions to Improve Secondary School English Teacher Education in Korea

  The purpose of this paper is to address the problems in the secondary school English teacher education in Korea and induce the teacher educators, policy makers and administrators to make more efforts and take the necessary actions to solve the problems. For that purpose the study first administered a questionnaire survey with 108 secondary school English teachers from seven middle schools and seven high schools to investigate the problems in the secondary school English education. It then analyzed the secondary school English teacher education programs in six national universities, focusing on the courses in the curriculum and the academic backgrounds and study areas of the faculty members. Based on the results of the analyses, the study argues that the secondary school English teacher education in this country requires much improvement to meet the needs in the field. Some suggestions are made to improve the secondary school English teacher education.
