Receptive vocabulary knowledge and productive vocabulary knowledge

  The purpose of this study was threefold; first, to examine the relationship among three types of vocabulary knowledge (passive, controlled active, and free active); second, to examine the relationship between three types of vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension; and last, to identify vocabulary learning strategy which may be relevant to productive vocabulary knowledge. Three sets of vocabulary knowledge test (the Vocabulary Levels Test, the Productive version of Vocabulary Levels Test, and Free Composition) a reading comprehension test and a vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire were used for data collection. The major findings of the present study were that three types of vocabulary knowledge had a statistically significant correlation. At the same time, however, receptive vocabulary was much larger than productive and the gap between the two types of knowledge became wider as the learners" vocabulary proficiency increased. Based on the findings on correlational analysis, receptive knowledge and free productive one proved to be important for successful reading comprehension. Strategies related to successful vocabulary production were identified, and their implications are discussed.
