The poetics of "metamorphosis" in The Faerie Queene Ⅰ

  The purpose of this study is to investigate the techniques of metamorphosis in The Faerie Queene I."Metamorphosis" basically means to change a form or figure. The Errour or Orgoglio represents the distorted figure of the Redcross knight, who is full of pride and does not show humility. In addition, transformed characters like Sansfoy and Duessa are created by the evil enchanter Alchimago and get the Redcross knight into trouble. This research includes not only examples of the character"s transformation, but also includes examples of trope like metaphor, symbol and prosopopoeia. This study also considers Fradubio, Avarice, Patience, Penance, Remorse, Repentance and Despair, whose names respectively stand for their roles in this work. Reading this text through the lens of metamorphosis provides us with various perspectives for understanding the character"s journey as a Christian knight.
