Evaluation is an important process to achieve the goal of education. In this study, the differences between on-line and off-line evaluations of Japanese conversational instruction were assessed and analyzed The study was conducted focusing on the objectives, criteria, subjects, methods, contents, and results of the evaluation. The results of the study revealed that there were differences between on-line and off-line evaluations. The problems of off-line evaluation were found to be as follows: 1) the simplicity of the content of the test problems; 2) the lack of conducting frequency and allowing time; 3) the overemphasis on grammar and written tests; and 4) the tardiness of the feedback for the test results and the subjectivity of marking the test On the other hand, the problems of on-line evaluation were found to be: 1) the shortage of evaluating communication ability; 2) too much emphasis on objective tests; 3) the lack of fairness and credibility for the test; 4) test problems not being changed; and 5) the lack of evaluating the individual competency and feedback. Based on the results of the comparison and analysis between. on-line and off-line evaluations, it is suggested that the study for ideal evaluation methods be conducted with focus on the objectives of Japanese education.
