A Study on the Narration Styles of 〈An Accordion〉 by Kim Won-Il

&nbsp;&nbsp;This study began with the logic that Kim Won-il&quot;s novels on the subject of separation between North and South Korea had meaningful formats as well as meaningful stories and illuminated his efforts on aesthetic formats and especially the narration styles by analyzing An Accordion.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;First, the replacements of the two speakers in establishing their relationships made a contribution to the discourse patterns of the text in addition to the speakers&quot; different social status and relationships based on the idea that An Accordion was a series.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;Second, the fact that the narration grew lyrical and distant through the two first-person speakers was examined in the biographic and observer narration style based on the theories by Mieke Bal.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;And third, the focalization process of each chapter was also examined with Park Do-su as fixed focalization and Park Gyeong-shik as variable focalization according to the internal focalization theory by Mieke Bal. Then the characteristics of focalization of An Accordion were reviewed. It turned out that Kim brought life to the issue of separation between North and South Korea through the maximization of the separation awareness via fantasy and imagination, the sophistication of internal reflection by the confusing tenses, and the heterogeneity of viewpoints by moving to and fro between fixed and variable focalization freely.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;In short, the study investigated the diverse narration styles of An Accordion based on the series format. Kim decided to choose the series format because he realized the certain limitations with approaching the issue of separation between North and South Korea from the perspective of materials even though the issue continued in the 21st century.
