근대성의 도시에서 시간화된 흐름과 공간 - 모더니즘 미술과 문학을 통해 보기

Temporalized Flows and Spaces in the City of Modernity: Looking through Modernist Art and Literature

  본 논문의 목적은 근대 도시에서 흐름의 시-공간을 ‘절대적 시-공간’에서 ‘공간화된 시간’의 차원을 넘어서서 ‘상대적 시-공간’에서 ‘시간화된 공간’의 차원에서 탐구하는 것이다. 본 논문은 먼저 시간과 공간에 관한 이론적 설명 틀로서 Bergson과 Deleuze의 논의를 검토한다. 다음으로, 19-20세기 전반 자본주의 도시에서 규율화된 ‘육체’의 물질적이고 가시적인 흐름을 수반하는 ‘공적 시-공간’의 특징과 모더니즘 문화에서 파편화 된 ‘의식’의 비물질적이고 비가시적인 흐름을 수반하는 ‘사적 시-공간’의 특징을 차례로 설명한다. 마지막으로, 20세기 전반에 쓰여진 모더니즘 소설인 James Joyce의 『율리시즈』와 박태원의 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』의 사례를 통해. 자본주의 및 모더니즘의 도시의 시-공간 조직을 ‘물질의 도시’에서 ‘공적 시-공간’뿐만 아니라 ‘기억의 도시’에서 ‘사적 시-공간’의 의미에서 살펴본다. 그리고 도시를 바라보고 이해하는 방식으로서 다중적 시­공간’을 제시하면서 본 논문을 마친다.

  This paper aims to explore the time-space of flows in modem cities in terms of not only "spatialized time" in "absolute time-space" but also "temporalized space" in "relative time-space". The paper first reviews Bergson"s and Deleuze"s theoretical schemes of time and space. Then, it illustrates the "public time-space" involving the material and visible flows of "bodies" disciplined in capitalist cities in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This is followed by explicating the "private time-space" entailing the immaterial and invisible flows of "consciousnesses" fragmented in modernist culture. Finally, it looks at the time-space fabric of capitalist and modernist cities in terms of not only "public time-space" in "the city of matter" but also "private time-space" in "the city of memory", using the cases of two modernist novels written in the first half of the 20th century: James Joyce"s Ulysses and Tae-Won Park"s A Day of the Novelist Mr. Kubo. The paper concludes with a call to think of "multiple time-spaces" as a way of seeing and understanding the city.
