탈식민주의 도시 상하이에서 장소기억의 경합

The Contested Place Memory in Postcolonial Shanghai

  과거에서 현재까지 근대 상하이는 식민주의와 근대성과 관련한 대립적 장소기억의 대상이었다. 근대 상하이의 상징적 경관들은 정치적 변화 속에서 끊임없이 제거되거나 이용되고 경합되어 왔다. 본 연구의 목적은 역사적으로 결정적인 순간들을 거치면서 근대 상하이에 관한 장소기억이 부끄러운 것에서 자랑스러운 것으로 변화하여 온 과정을 검토하는 것이다. 특히 본 연구는 개혁개방 이후 상하이에서 근대 시기에 대한 노스탤지어가 어떻게 구성되고 소비되는지를 밝힘으로서, 사회주의 체제 하 탈식민주의 도시에서 나타나는 장소기억의 복잡한 과정을 드러내고자 한다.

  For the long time, modem Shanghai has been the contested object of two distinct interpretations about colonialism and modernity. Symbolic landscapes of modem Shanghai have been removed, utilized, and contested over the political changes of China. This paper examines how the memory of modem Shanghai has been changed from the shameful to the proud for the critical historic moments. Specially, this paper explores how modem Shanghai nostalgia is socially constructed and consumed in post-reform China. It shows the complexity of the place memory in the socialist postcolonial city.
