맹자 사상을 통해 본 배움의 의미

The Meaning of Learning in the thought of Mencius

  본고는 맹자 사상의 심성론과 수양론에 담긴 배움의 의미를 밝힌다. 인간의 심성이 본래 어떠한가는 배움의 목적 및 가능성을 정하는 데 중요하다. 맹자는 인간이면 누구나 ‘차마 하지 못하는 마음(不忍人之心)’ 즉, 仁義禮智의 단초가 되는 근본적인 선성(善性)을 소유하고 있다고 본다. 이를 통해 본고는 배움의 목적은 외부적으로 주어지는 것이 아니라 인간 본래의 완전한 선성을 지향해야 함을 밝힌다. 인간의 선성은 악한 환경과 욕심으로 인하여 봉쇄되고 소실되는데 여기에 배움의 필요성이 있다. 다만 그 선성은 완전히 소멸되는 것이 아니라 뿌리가 남아있고 스스로 선을 추구하려는 자율 의지가 잔존하므로 배움의 가능성이 있다. 맹자의 수양론은 봉쇄되고 소실된 선성을 찾아 보존하는 것으로 요약된다. 그것은 구체적으로 첫째, 반성과 자각을 통해 자신의 선성이 악한 마음과 행실로 가려져 있음을 깨닫는 것, 둘째, 마음과 실천의 상호병행으로 어떤 유혹에도 굴하지 않는 강한 의지를 단련하는 것, 셋째, 본성 및 사물의 이치를 철저히 궁구하는 것, 넷째, 전심 집중하여 배우며 자신의 내면으로부터 수렴ㆍ확충하는 것이다. 이것들은 배움의 내용 및 방법을 구성한다.

&nbsp;&nbsp;This study examines the meaning in theory of mind and education of Mencius. To know human nature is important to understand the goal and possibility of learning. Mencius observes every person has the original good nature. For this reason, the goal of learning does not come from the outside but from the original good human nature. The good nature is blocked and lost because of bad environment and desire, so human beings need learning. However, the good nature is not extinguished, but the root of it and the will to goodness remain. Here comes the possibility of learning.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;The core in the theory of education of Mencius is to discover and keep the blocked and lost good nature. In order to attain the goal, we should first realize that the good nature is blocked by bad mind and behavior. Second, we should practice mind and action, by doing so, train strong will that does not move from temptation. Third, we should examine the nature and reason of things. Forth, we should learn through concentration and reflection. They are contents and methods of learning.
