This article aims at identifying the driving force of the firms’ innovative activities. Focusing the Japanese long-lived firms in business for at least two hundred years since their foundation, it views the commitment to survive and sustain the growth of family business as the major origin of innovation. Such a commitment was reinforced by Confucianism philosophy, which has further intensified in Japan by Singaku. Dynamism of continuous innovation, sustainable growth for a long time period and the commitment for survival is observed typically in family businesses but may be applicable not only to non-family businesses but also worldwide, which needs to be examined in the forthcoming empirical and statistical survey.
