The term, neoconservatism is widely used these days among Korean intellectuals and journalists. They use the word when explaining or excoriating the Bush administration"s "imperialistic" foreign policies in particular the Iraq War and the policy towards North Korea. Despite the vogue for the term there has been very few academic efforts to probe into the definitions and origins of the term in Korea.
Such intelligentia as Leo Strauss, Reinhod Niebuhr, or Lionel Trilling usually are referred to as the godfathers of neoconservatives. This essay explores the connections between the Lionel Trilling"s only novel, The Middle of the Journey and neoconservatism.
Trilling broke off with the Stalinist liberalism of the 1930s and 40s, which prevailed among the then intellectuals, especially Jewish intellectuals in New York. He showed Stalinist liberals a way to detach themselves from communism, One of the origins of neoconservatism lies in the novel"s motif, parting from communism.
