This paper analyzes the autobiographical narrative in September Monkey (1954) by Induk Pahk from the perspective of the Korean New Woman"s experience of modernity, particularly through spatial relocation. Induk Pahk occupies a the peculiar position among Korean New Women"s group, because, unlike other Korean New Women who encountered modernity mostly through Japan and its educational system, she experienced it through the American system. When she decided to write her life story in English, she did it with a conscious intention of introducing the unknown Korea to the English speaking readers. In September Monkey, Induk"s experience of changing her gender identity by cross-dressing plays a crucial role in transforming her sense of self and life, that makes her life story stand wide apart from those of typical Korean women of those days. I argue that Induk"s experience of modernity through spatial relocation-her experience of being educated in USA and the opportunity she had to travel globally-turns her life into a story of empowerment, that contrasts sharply with those of other New Women in Korea Her success is testified in the establishment of the Induk Educational Foundation, the fruition of her lifelong dream of founding a school in Korea to educate Korean boys.
