While English has a variety of fricative sounds such as /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /f/, /v/, /ɵ/, /ð/, Korean has only two kinds of fricatives, /ㅅ/ and /ㅆ/. Based on the prediction that Korean learners of English will have difficulty in pronouncing English fricative sounds, this paper tries to investigate and compare the phonetic and acoustic characteristics of English fricative sounds produced by English native speakers and Korean learners. The rise time, the duration of frication and the duration of aspiration are known as important acoustic cues for analyzing fricatives. The acoustic and statistic analysis of this paper is based on the measurement of the three acoustic cues classified by the position of the fricative sound in a word. The results of this paper show that English native speakers and Korean learners are significantly different in the three acoustic cues of all fricatives in nearly every position of a word. According to the results of the analysis, the rise time and the duration of frication tend to be longer in English native speakers’ pronunciations than in Korean learners’ pronunciations, but the duration of aspiration is longer in Korean learners’ pronunciations.
