18세기경에 창작된 장편소설인 옥환기봉 은 광무제의 한실(漢室) 회복 이야기와, 곽황후가 폐출되고 음귀인이 황후가 되는 황후 폐립 이야기로 이루어져 있다. 이 작품이 이처럼 중국의 역사를 바탕으로 창작되었다는 점을 중시하여 이 글에서는 중국 역사가 적극적으로 수용된 한실 회복 이야기를 대상으로 그 수용 양상을 살피고, 두 이야기가 어떻게 얽혀 작품의 구조를 형성하고 있는지 검토하였다. 한실 회복 이야기 가운데 기병에서부터 황제 즉위까지의 사건들은 주로 후한서 와 동한연의 를, 즉위 이후의 사건들은 대부분 동한연의 를 통해 역사를 수용하고 있다. 그리고 한실 회복 이야기의 각 사건들은 일부의 내용을 변용하거나 새로운 삽화를 삽입, 혹은 첨가하거나 인물을 매개하거나 또는 시간을 병치하여 황후 폐립 이야기와 직, 간접으로 연관되도록 하고 있다. 이러한 역사 수용 양상에 대한 검토를 통해 작자가 역사적 사실에 충실하고자 하였다는 점, 광무제의 인품과 영웅성의 부각에 많은 노력을 기울였다는 점 등을 확인할 수 있다. 역사적 사실에 대한 존중은 작품의 바탕을 이루는 작자의 기본적 서술 태도라고 할 수 있다. 또 한실 회복 이야기에 제시된 광무제의 긍정적인 면모는 황후 폐립 이야기와 결부되어 결과적으로 황후 폐립과 관련된 광무제의 태도와 처사를 정당화하는 역할을 한다고 할 수 있다. 작자의 창작 역량 또한 역사 수용 양상에 대한 검토를 통해 확인할 수 있는 또 하나의 중요한 사실이다. 작자는 한실 회복 이야기를 황후 폐립 이야기와 밀접하게 연결함으로써 황후 폐립 이야기의 전개에 필요한 조건과 여건을 마련할 수 있었으며, 이를 통해 탄탄한 작품 구조를 구축할 수 있었다. 이는 역사를 수용하여 작품화하는 작자의 능력이 결코 평범하지 않았다는 것을 말해주는 것으로 이를 통해 작자의 창작 역량은 물론 당시 고전 장편 소설의 창작 수준과 역사 수용 방식을 가늠할 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.

This paper aims at investigating the aspects and meanings of historical acceptance in Okhwangibong written in about 18th century in Korea. Okhwangibong deals with the historical events in the Later Han of ancient China, that is to say the Emperor Kwangmu's recovery of the Han Dynasty and the Empress Gwak's banishment and the royal harem Eum's accession to the queen consort. The story of the recovery of Han accepts the historical events through Huhanseo, the history book of the Later Han and Donghanyeoneui, historical novel of the Later Han. And it is connected the story of banishment and accession of the queens with the changes of the contents in Huhanseo and Donghanyeoneui, and the insertions of fictional contents, etc. We can find the several meanings in these aspects of the historical acceptance in this work. First of all we can ascertain the author'sefforts for the reflection of historical facts and the emphasis of Kwangmu's dignity and his heroic feature. And it can be said that the author's problem consciousness and creative capability are not poor absolutely. I anticipate that this study can contribute to investigate the historical acceptance in Okhwangibong, and the writing methods of Korean classical long novel in the 18th Joseon Dynasty.
