이 논문은 논술 교육의 폐해를 비판하고, 논술고사가 폐지되어야 하는 까닭을 밝히는데 그 목적이 있다. 필자는 논술 교육은 중등 교육과정에서 시행되는 보편 인문 교양 교육의 한 영역으로 자리매김 되는 것이 바람직하다고 주장한다. 논술 고사는 상위 30% 학생들의 변별력 확보를 위해 도입되었기 때문에 숱한 반교육적 현상들을 만들어 내고 있다. 이는 논술 고사 문항을 분석해 보면 알 수 있다. 실제 논술문 작성 과정에서는 단순하고 도식적인 사고가 창의적이고 풍부한 사고보다 더 효과적이다. 문제 유형에 익숙하지 않은 학생이 범하는 작은 실수가 논술문 작성의 큰 방향타를 어긋나게 한다. 그리고 학생들의 인생 경험이나 독서 체험, 사회의식을 드러낼 수 있는 레퍼런스를 차단당한 채 작성하는 규격화된 논술문이 학생의 진정한 수준을 드러내지 못한다. 따라서 필자는 논술 고사가 학생들의 인문 교양 형성을 방해하고 있으며, 지적 능력이 아닌 도덕적 덕성으로 ‘교양’의 의미가 새롭게 정립되어야 한다고 주장한다. 필자는 논술 고사를 폐지하고 ‘삶을 위한 논술 교육’으로 방향이 전환되어야 한다고 주장하며, 그 한 예로써 논술 수업 사례를 제시한다.
The purpose of this paper is to criticize the current practice of essay writing education and discuss why the current pattern of essay tests should be abolished. I suggest that essay writing education should be dealt with as a part of the universal liberal arts education. As the current essay test was simply introduced as a way to differentiate the top 30 % of students having academic ability, the practice of essay writing education doesn't match educational purposes, causing a lot of problems. If we analyze the essay test questions, the problems will be revealed clearly. In reality, in the process of essay writing, simple and fixed ways of thinking are more effective than deep and creative ways of thinking. In some cases, minor mistakes made by students not accustomed to the pattern of essay tests may result in the wrong direction of essay writing process. The current essay test also has a definite limitation in that it doesn't reflect students' life and reading experiences or social consciousness, producing standardized and fixed types of essays. Therefore, the current system of essay test doesn't contribute to producing well-educated person and the aim of essay writing education should be to cultivate students' moral virtue, not intellectual ability. In conclusion, I suggest that essay writing tests should be abolis hed and redirected toward 'essay writing education for students' meaningful life'. My own essay writing class will illustrate the point.
