It has been ten years since performance assessment was introduced in the field of primary and secondary English classrooms in Korea in 1998. The purpose of this study is to make an investigation into the realities of performance assessment by looking at how secondary English teachers perceive and carry out performance assessment. The present study surveyed 194 English teachers of middle and high schools in Incheon and Seoul. The findings show that while teachers agreed on the need for performance assessment, they pointed out several difficulties in implementing performance assessment. The major difficulties were use of assessment methods that do not serve the purpose of performance assessment and lack of consistency in the process of assessment.
