Mothers' Perceptions of Mixed-Age Grouping in Montessori Program

The purpose of this study was to investigate mothers' perceptions of the necessity, strengths, and weaknesses of mixed-age groupings, and mothers' understanding of the montessori program. Subjects were 362 mothers whose children are in Montessori preschools. Mothers recognized that the Montessori program is good for overall development for their children, and mixed-age grouping is necessary to some degree in Montessori education. The mothers' perceptions of mixed-age groupings varied significantly, depending on the mother's education, children's sex, age and the number of children. The older the children are, better the mothers understands mixed-age groupings in Montessori program.
