English is the de facto common language of international print media. Despite this commonality, there are contentions that regional differences still exist between English usage in EFL/ESL communities versus ENL communities, in which English is the native tongue. Prior research on oral and written language samples has suggested that item usage may vary within grammatical categories, and that particular regional differences occur in modal auxiliaries. The present study further investigated such findings by analyzing tokens in written corpora consisting of newspaper articles. It focused on the usage of modals of prediction and volition such as will, would, shall, and be going to in newspaper articles published in different English language communities. The results indicated that these modals are subject to regional differences in usage.
