Development of Local Area by the Effective Utilization of Rural Land Studies : Focused on the Wanjugun

Each local government in Korean society has been taxing their brains for ideas to revitalize the rural areas. The proportion of cultivated land is 21.2%, which is estimated to be relatively large for non-cultivated land. Even though this proportion is not enough for food self-sufficiency but this is relatively small for our economy. With soaring grain and raw material prices as well as surging petrol prices, there is not any part that is unimportant but that the non-agricultural land is in short supply means that our competitiveness of our industry is being undermined by lack of land which is much needed to expand our industry. Until now, it is true that our rural areas have been hollowed by aging and demographic decrease and this trend has accelerated. Land in fallow (2,6100 ha in 2006) is dramatically increasing and the competitiveness of our rural areas has been ever more weakening. Since agriculture is a vital part of food supply for Korean public, we cannot abandon it. However what we need to think about is how the agriculture can be helpful to national competitiveness. This is not easy. That is why we are trying to avoid individual utilization of rural land and introduce a plan for land usage based on administrative unit of Eup and Myon by designating specialized project such as tourism complex, industrial complex, residential complex, agricultural industry complex and special production localities. We performed SWOT analysis to review this matter.
