This paper investigated the transmission aspects and cultural characteristics of folk ballads focused on the works in Chungcheong district. Chungcheong district does not have the abundant folk ballads comparing with Jeonnam or Geoungbuk District. Only 29 types are transmitted of 61 types. The type of relation between husband's family and a daughter in law which is transmitted the most abundantly in other districts is not transmitted briskly. The type of relation between the husband and wife or man and woman is transmitted more briskly. That's the reason why Chungcheong district doesn't have the sufficient circumstances that could make folk ballads created and transmitted. Even though folk ballads dose not abound in Chungcheong districts, they have unique motifs that don't appear in other districts. They also express the self respect consciousness and confident attitude. The type of relation between man and woman shows the liberal and open consciousness about sexual relation. To be contrast with that Chungcheong district is the traditional Yangban society, folk ballads reveal the desire and hope to escape from this authoritative circumstances. Folk ballads in Chungcheong district are inclined to be so didactic that enumerate the process of a work or part of a material. And they usually finish with the happy and fictional ending. The cultual characteristics that folk ballads in Chunhcheong district have are as follows : They reveal knowledge instead of emotion, they deal with compromise more importantly than conflict, and they prefer the happy ending to the miserable ending. We ought to give a careful consideration to generalize the result of this study, because I examined only works of Chungcheong district. In order to get the denfinite result, we should expand investigation of folk ballads to the all districts and compare the existent aspects of folk ballads in districts. I look forward to succeeding the study of folk ballads more briskly.
