몽촌토성에서는 백제작으로 알려진 다양한 문양의 능형문와당, 수지문와당, 연화돌대문와당 등이 출토되었다. 이들 중 수지문와당은 몽촌토성과 근거리에 위치하고 있는 풍납토성에서도 검출된 바 있어 백제작으로 보는 데에 큰 이견이 없으리라 생각된다. 그러나 능현문와당과 연화돌대문와당은 그 동안 풍납토성을 비롯한 웅진기의 와당에서도 전혀 검출되지 않아 이의 국적을 백제로 정함에 많은 의문이 있다. 특히 몽토성에서는 많은 양의 고구려토기와 건물지등이 확인된바 있어 출토 와당의 국적을 선정하는데 더욱더 어려움이 있으리라 생각된다. 능현문와당과 연화돌대문와당은 적어도 5세기 후반에 이르기까지 백제 및 신라에서 전혀 살필 수 없다. 반면, 고구려의 국내성 및 평양지역 주변에서는 귀목형의 자방, 자아외곽의 원권대, 판구외곽의 원권대, 2-3조의 양가대 등 두 와례에서 보이는 와당 요소를 어렵지 않게 살필 수 있다. 따라서 몽촌토성에서 검출된 능형문와당 및 연화돌대문와당은 고구려의 제와술로 제작된 와당임을 추정해 볼 수 있겠다. 향후 한강유역에서 수집되는 와당의 검토를 통하여 겅물지의 국적과 축조기법 등의 특성을 파악하는데 일조할 수 있으리라 생각된다.
A various types of pattern such as the diamond shape, the lotus flowers including the branch pattem are caved on the known Baekje roof-end tiles excavated from Mongchon Castle. Of these types of roof-end tiles, the branch-pattern roof tiles only have a close connection with the roof samples excavated from Pungnap Castle. But the earthenware and the building sites of Goguryeo style show the possibilities that the Goguryeo roof tiles may be collected from this castle. The detailed pattrns such as diamond shape and lotus flower have the characteristics which are not found in Backje or Shilla in the same period. Bout these patterns found easily in the Goguryeo roof-end tile show that these roof tiles are presumably the Goguryeo roof-end tiles manufactured with the roof tile manufacturing technique of Goguryeo. Hereafter it is believed need the review on the roof-end tiles excavated from the Han River basin and the vicinity of Seoul.
