The purpose of this study is to find out how listening activities of English fairy tales focusing on English pronunciation can improve not only the listening and speaking ability but pronunciation proficiency. It was implemented under the environment without any other private education by teaching one 6th grader in a primary school. The subject listened to one fairy tale a week for 23 weeks with the explanation of the pronunciation. The interview and 4 types of intonation (statement, Wh-question, Yes/No question, command) sentences were recorded. To figure out the improvement of pronunciation proficiency, the pronunciations were analyzed by using the acoustic analysis program (Praat) and by one native speaker. To evaluate the objective effect, the pre/post PELT jr Level 1 test scores and PELT jr speaking test scores were compared. The results show that listening instruction focusing on English pronunciation using fairy tales was proven to be very helpful. These results indicate that pronunciation-based practice enhances not only young learners’ pronunciation proficiency in the critical period but furthermore their listening and speaking ability.
