Recent Trend and Development Plan in Korean Laver Industry

The laver aquaculture industry in Korean has grown up through constant technique development. The recent output of laver has more than doubled since 1990. Although the laver output has increased, its overproduction and low prices became the major issues in these days. There are many reasons. For example, the issues are caused by illegal aquaculture for output increase, deterioration of fishing farm, low quality commodities for expense reduction, distortion of the system of market price decision. In this article, various countermeasures are presented in the section of production, market and trade in order to solve these problems. In brief, in the production section are system improvement and illegal facility suppression, improvement of breed and sowing method, development of a substitute for laver medicines(organic acid). And in the market section are refinement and specialization of fisheries outlook function, standardization and brand-making of laver commodities. And in the trade section are production of high quality and sanitary laver goods, export market diversification, intensification of advertisement. However, separate propulsion of these measures and policies will be little effective. As if we can see in the governmental policy direction, synergy-effect like new value-added and demand creation will be maximized only when integrating every section of the industry. The export amount of laver reaches 60 billion dollars in 2007. Laver is among the 10 major fisheries export commodities, and its export amount and destinations are both increasing recently. It is time to get out of the image of quick sales at small profits and develop high price commodities and expand overseas market beyond the domestic market. For this, fishermen and each fisheries companies are to be self-reliant in leading the industry, and also the government need to support system improvement, investment in equipment, R&D and so on. A new production-distribution system is to be established by the join efforts with the persons concerned and then the quality of laver commodities is improved as soon as possible according to the extensive action plans.
