탈영웅적 사회와 평화의 전망

Postheroic Society and its Prospect for Peace

희생태세의 감소로 특징지어지는 사회의 탈영웅화와 그에 따른 전쟁수행방식의 탈영웅화는 1990년대 이후로 유럽과 미국의 일부 학자들에 의해서 관찰되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 탈영웅화 현상이 그 자체로 평화를 의미하지는 않는다. 탈영웅화 현상은, 그들에 따르면, 사회의 도시화와 인구성장율의 감소로 인한 것이며, 탈영웅적인 사회는 성공적으로 도시화하지 못하고 여전히 높은 인구성장률을 지닌 영웅적인 사회 혹은 영웅적인 공동체와 동시대에 존재하게 된다. 근대성과 영웅성의 이같은 불일치가 일시적이나마 전쟁의 소멸을 가져오는 듯했지만, 무기기술의 확산과 테러리즘이 그 가능성을 우회하여 새로운 전쟁을 가져온다는 것이 또 다른 관찰이다. 따라서 분쟁이 발생하게 된다면 우월한 무기체계를 지닌 탈영웅적 사회와 우월한 희생태세를 갖춘 영웅적 공동체 간에 발생하게 되며, 이때 영웅적인 공동체는 자신들이 지닌 비대칭적 우월성에 기초하여 탈영웅적인 사회의 불안정한 정신적 하부구조를 공격한다. 이러한 환경 속에서 가능한 탈영웅적 사회의 평화는 어떤 모습일까? 시민적 자유의 희생을 대가로 하는 보안국가와 시민들의 영웅적인 초연함은 그 가능한 두 모습일 것이다.

The postheroic societies, which are characterized by a reduced readiness of society members to sacrifice themselves for the overall good of society and their accordingly postheroic way of warfare, have been observed since the last decade of the twentieth century by some academics and researchers in the USA and in Europe. However,these postheroic phenomena do not ensure by themselves that peace prevails. The emergence of the postheroic society has been caused by urbanization and decreasing birthrate. Therefore, postheroic societies continue to coexist with heroic societies or communities which are not successfully urbanized and which maintain a relatively high birthrate. This disparity between modernity and heroicity ape can cause new wars. Conflicts flare up between postheroic societies with superior weapons and heroic communities with a greater readiness to sacrifice and attack the labile mental substructure of postheroic societies on the basis of their asymmetric superiority (Ed- I don’t understand). What kind of peace can be achieved and in which form will this peace be taken in this situation? Two possible forms of peace in a postheroic society are the security state which is managed at the cost of abandoning civil rights and freedom, and the heroic tranquility of citizens.
