Since Japanese colonial rule we have used a lot number as an address in civil law relation without an applicable act. However an address in public law relation is also expressed with a lot number under "Citizen Registration Act". For settlement of problem caused a lot number as an address Korean government enacted "Road Name and Address Marking Act" in 2006. The act has a provision that marking of address is changed from a lot number to a 'Road name address' assigned every building in public law relation. This change is not applicable in civil law relation in principle. But it has an indirect effect on civil law relation with some kinds of public records as followings. (1) An address of related person in the register of building is marked with a 'Road name address'. (2) A 'Road name address' is also entered in the register of building and the building ledger in addition to a lot number. (3) The standard place of registration in a family status registry is marked with a 'Road name address' under "Road Name and Address Marking Act", but it is tentatively substituted by a lot number until completion of road name address project. (4) The address of a testator in a holograph document can be marked by the alternative of a 'Road name address' or a lot number in spite of "Road Name and Address Marking Act".
