대학교육과정의 확대와 정합성에 대한 역사적 고찰

Proliferation and Coherence in Colleges Curriculum centering around the History of American Higher Education

370여년 미국 고등교육과정사를 살펴보면, 사회의 요구를 반영한 새로운 교과목은 꾸준히 추가․신설되었지만 기존의 교육과정에서 삭제․폐지된 교과목은 적었던 것으로 나타났다. 교육과정 변화에는 저항이 따르고, 기존의 교육과정을 유지하려는 움직임과 새로운 교육과정으로 개선하려는 움직임은 대립과 갈등들을 피하기 위해 타협을 하면서 추가⋅신설만 하는 절충안을 채택하였다. 결과적으로 식민지시기에 비해 광범위한 교육과정이 두꺼운 대학요람 형식으로 나타났다. 유기적이지 못한(incoherent), 폭 넓은 교육과정에서 학생들은 흥미와 직업적 진로만을 좇아 쉬운 개론과목 위주로 수강하거나 일반선택을 전공선택으로 활용하기도 하는 등 여러 가지 부작용도 나타났다. 교육과정은 유기적(coherent)이어야 한다. 새로운 교과목의 추가와 신설은 광범위한 교육과정을 초래하여 정합성(coherence)을 상실하는 원인이 될 수 있다. 유기적이지 못한, 단절된 교육과정은 비효율적이며 유용하고 지속가능한 학습을 조성할 수 없다. 따라서 새로운 교과목이 추가되어 광범위한 교육과정이 되더라도 정합성을 유지하도록 노력해야 할 것이다.

When we study the history of American higher education we will find that colleges have continued to open new courses in their curriculum. They have accepted the needs of the public, and added and accreted technical and vocational subjects to their classical curriculum. The supporters who have taken a serious view of liberal education have made efforts to maintain traditional curriculum. The upholders who have attached much importance to the field of study and professional education, however, have done their best to change the curriculum to practical and vocational one. The conservatives have accounted liberal arts important as college subjects but the progressives have thought much of science. The curriculum has being changed from liberal arts-centered curriculum to vocationally and professionally oriented curriculum. The small and narrow breadth of curriculum in the Colonial Era has changed to large and wide breadth of curriculum in the Contemporary Era. The current and broad curriculum, however, is not coherent. Broad curriculum which does not have sequence and coherence is not likely to be effective and efficient. Incoherent collections of courses are not likely to produce sustained long-term learning. Curricular coherence means to the probability that students will encounter logical sequences of coursework leading to useful and long-lasting skills and insights about the world. A fragmented curriculum is less effective and efficient than a coherent one. Curriculum should be coherent.
