영랑의 시어 ‘제우다’에 대하여

Youngnang’s Poetic Word ‘jeuda’

영랑의 시 ‘除夜’에 ‘제운밤’, ‘제운맘’이라는 시어가 사용되었다. 이에 대해서 그동안 단편적으로 여러 해석이 내려졌는데, 크게 보면 ‘제운밤’이 ‘除夜’를 고유어로 표현한 신조어라는 견해, ‘제우다’가 표준어 ‘겹다’와 관련이 있다는 견해, ‘제우다’가 방언의 ‘제우다’와 같은 의미를 갖는다는 견해 등으로 요약할 수 있다. ‘제운밤’ 및 ‘제운맘’의 정확한 의미를 고찰하기 위해 각각의 주장들을 검토해 보면, ‘제운밤’이 ‘除夜’를 의미하는 신조어라는 견해는 방언의 ‘제우다’를 고려하지 않은 해석으로서 논거가 부족하고, ‘제우다’가 표준어 ‘겹다’ 및 방언의 ‘제우다’와 관련이 있다는 견해는 객관적인 타당성이 있다. 다만 기존의 논의에서는 표준어 ‘겹다’와 방언의 ‘제우다’가 서로 관련이 있다는 접점을 언급하지 못했고, 미시적으로 ‘제운밤’, ‘제운맘’의 문맥적 의미를 세밀하게 제시하지 못했다는 아쉬움을 남긴다. ‘제운밤’은 ‘깊은 밤’ 또는 ‘늦은 밤’으로 해석할 수 있고, ‘제운맘’은 ‘시름겨운 마음’, ‘시름 많은 마음’으로 해석할 수 있다.

The poetic words ‘jeunbam’, and ‘jeunmam’ occur in Youngnang’s poem ‘jeya’. In these words, we guess that ‘jeun’ is a pre-noun form of the declinable word ‘jeuda’. However, the word ‘jeuda’ is not common, so its correct meaning is not well understood. Although many people have raised various interpretations of this word, they didn’t refer to the existing interpretations from others. So these interpretations have remained very fragmentary. To explain the meaning of a ‘jeuda’, I investigated the meaning of the Korean standard word ‘kyeoda’ and the dialect word ‘jeuda’. As a result, I found that the ‘jeuda’ as used in literary works is the same as the dialect word ‘jeuda’ and is related with the Korean standard word ‘kyeoda’. To summarize, ‘jeunbam’ means ‘a deep or late night’ and ‘jeunmam’ means ‘an uneasy or troubled mind’.
