The political economy of exchange and the ethics of gift

이 논문의 목적은 채만식의 『탁류』의 문제성을 새롭게 규명하는 것이다. 이제까지 『탁류』는 지나치게 부분적이고 표면적으로만 읽혀왔다. 그 결과 『탁류』는 살아가는데 필수적인 쌀마저도 수탈당하는 식민지 현실을 반영한 소설이거나 아니면 한 여성의 수난의 과정을 통해 식민지 현실의 고통을 표현한 소설로 평가되어 왔다. 하지만 『탁류』는 그것 외에 보다 중요한 진실을 표현하고 있으며 바로 그 점 때문에 위대한 소설이라 할 수 있다. 우리가 『탁류』에서 주목해야 할 것은 두 가지이다. 하나는 『탁류』가 식민지 혹은 주변부 근대화의 중요한 특성을 발견했다는 점이다. 『탁류』는 당시 미두장에 대한 열풍과 정주사와 초봉이라는 인물의 몰락 과정을 집중적으로 그려낸다. 이를 통해 한편으로는 쌀 등 인간 생활에 필수적인 재화는 물론 인간(특히 여성)마저도 상품화하는 자본주의의 악마적 속성을 충격적으로 묘사하고, 다른 한편으로는 민중들의 염원과 관계없이 일방적으로 결정되는 식민제국의 지배 정책으로부터 소외되고 그 때문에 도박과도 같은 생활을 해야 하는 식민지 민중의 고통을 밀도 있게 그려낸다. 우리가 『탁류』를 주목해야 하는 또 하나의 이유는 『탁류』가 세상의 모든 것을 교환가치로 환원하는 그 타락한 세계를 넘어설 가능성으로 증여의 윤리를 제시했다는 점이다. 『탁류』는 남승재나 계봉이라는 인물의 더 낮은 계층을 향한 자기희생과 배려를 대단히 의미 있는 것으로 묘사하는데, 이를 통해 인류가 정신적 동물왕국의 시대를 넘어서기 위해서는 상품－화폐 경제 때문에 잃어버린 인류가 상실한 증여의 모럴을 되찾는 것이 필요하다고 제시한다. 결론적으로 말하자면 『탁류』는 제국에 의한 식민지지배가 식민지 민중에게 먹고 사는 데 모든 노력을 경주해야만 하는 정신적 동물왕국의 삶을 강요한다는 사실을 예리하게 읽어내는 한편 그 모순을 극복할 수 있는 가치관으로 ‘고귀한 지출’의 윤리라는 구체적 가능성을 발견한 소설이며, 『탁류』의 문제성은 바로 여기에 있다.

The aim of this thesis is examine the problematics of 『Tak-ryu』 newly. Until now, 『Tak-ryu』 has been read by people very partially and superficially. As a result, 『Tak-ryu』 has been valued as a novel that reflects the reality of colony that plundered rice, necessaries of life, or expresses the pain of actuality of colony by describing the process of one woman's suffering. However, it expresses the more important truth, and because of that it can be a great noble. There are two things that we must pay attention to it. First, it found the special feature of modernization in colony and near of the colony. 『Tak-ryu』 depicts the wave of the rice exchange and the falling of ‘Jung Ju Sa’ and ‘Cho Bong’ intensively. Through this, it describes the evil property of capitalism that commercialize not only the necessary property like rice, but also human beings(especially woman). On the other it describes colony people’s painful life that estranged by the policy of colonizing country that ignore colony people’s desire, so they should live their life like gambling. Another reason that we must concentrate on 『Tak- ryu』 is that it presents the ethics of gift for the possibility to escape from this world that give back all things by the value of trade. 『Tak-ryu』 describes the self-sacrifice and care to lower class of Nam Seung-Jae and Gye-bong very importantly, by this, 『Tak-ryu』 presents that human beings must get back the ethics of gift that lost by economy of goods and money to escape from mental kingdom of animals. In conclusion, 『Tak-ryu』 is a noble that expresses in-depth the fact that control of a colony by an empire compelled colony people the life of mental kingdom of animals that make a effort to live, and on the other presents the value to overcome the contradiction that ‘ethics of depense noble’, and here is the importance of 『Tak-ryu』.
