Clinical study of Absence seizure

A clinical study was conducted on 33 patients of absence seizure, who had admitted to pediatric department of Yonsei University medical center from March 1986 March 1994. The results were obtained as follows : 1) The age of onset was between 1 year 9 month to 11 year 9 month, and peak age was between 6 year to 8 year. 2) The sex distribution, male to female ratio was 1:1.35. 3) The EEG revealed 3 spike & wave in all patients and 17 patients had additional abnormal EEG pattern: each 4 patients were associated with generalized polyspikes, 13 patients were associated with multifocal irregular slow and sharp waves or focal spikes. 4) Eighteen patients received ethosuximide only, and others were used combind therapy, valproic acid, clonazepam, & carbamazepine. 5) The side effects of ethosuximide therapy were nausea & vomiting followed by hematologic abnormality.
