Study on the Spatial Segregation Pattern of the Housing-poor in the Seoul Metropolitan Area

1. CONTENTS (1) RESEARCH OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study is to analyze the spacial distributions of the urban housing poor and their change patterns in the Seoul metropolitan area based on the concept of dissimilarity and isolation. (2)RESEARCH METHOD There has been several trials extending the traditional methods over the last few decades and the extended version of regional segregation measures was used to decompose the global index into the local ones. (3) RESEARCH FINDINGS The results demonstrated that in the Seoul metropolitan area the degree of dissimilarity showed no clear-cut tendency whereas a decrease in the degree of isolation was drastic over the last ten years. 2. RESULTS Most of the previous studies have employed aspatial measures of segregation which produced the global index. The newly developed measures could provide sufficient information on the segregation pattern at the local level, thus enabling to develop policies for the housing-poor.
