We reviewed the medical records of 229 children who were admitted to Severence hospital for status epilepticus from 1984 to 1993. The majority (77%) Were less than 5 years of age, the age group between 1 and 3 years being the most. The patients of status epilepticus were classified as generalized tonic clonic in 109 cases, generalized tonic with partial onset in 56, generalized tonic clonic with partial onset in 23, simple partial in 20 and nonconvulsive in 11. The presumptive causes of status epilepticus were fever in 79 cases(34%), previous epilepsy in 47(21%), idiopathic in 37(16%), acute symptomatic in 35(15%), and remote symptomatic in 31(14%). Acute symptomatic causes were higher in proportion in less than 1 year of age group than any other age group Overall mortality within 3 months was 9%. One hundred and fifty cases were followed up for average 30 months, and the neurologic sequelae including motor and cognitive function were found in 22 cases(15%). The mortality and neurological sequelae were highest in acute symptomatic cause group. The relation between the duration of status epilepticus and neurologic sequelae was significant in general (p=0.03) but no significant relation only upto 12 hours of duration to neurologic sequelae was found.
