본 연구는 서양에서 근대미술 이후 많은 화가들이 조각 작품을 제작하게 된 배경과 계기에 대해 살펴보면서 그것이 갖는 의미와 조각에 미친 영향에 대해 알아보는 것이다. 먼저 회화와 조각의 공통점과 차이점을 밝히고 연구자가 접근할 수 있는 자료 범위 내에서 화가들이 조각 작품을 제작하게 된 배경, 그리고 화가들이 조각가로 전환한 경우에는 그 계기에 대해 알아보았다. 그 결과에 의해 화가들의 조각이 그들의 회화에 그리고 조각가들 뿐만 아니라 현대조각에 준 자극과 영향이 있는가, 확인하고자 하였다. 마지막으로 미술교육 현장에서 회화와 조각의 표현 지도를 할 때 반영하거나 유의해야 할 점이 있는가에 관한 논거를 제기하고자 하였다.
This study examines the causes and contexts that many painters became to create sculpture works and how their works have influenced the sculpture field. First, there are several reasons why painters have created sculpture works and even some painters changed their job to sculptors - the matter of healthy; the impact of sculptors and their works; the change of the perspective about primitive art; the successful dealing with the limit of painting; the search for the inner world of human being; the casual opportunity to contact with sculpture; the case of being attracted to sculpture works, etc. It is impossible to compare with the way of creating, the feature and attitude between painting and sculpture, but it can be seen there are some similarity of plastic factors, principles and expressing ways. And also it is demonstrated that the sculpture works created by painters have had an impact upon the contemporary art. This fact means that sculptors can also use the same ways of painters who have used new materials and methods on their works beyond painting. Finally, it is suggested that, when teaching sculpture and painting in art education fields, if it is taught to student the reasons for being created sculpture by painters and the impact on contemporary art, it is useful for understanding both sculpture and painting.
