중등 영어 1급 정교사 자격연수 프로그램 개선을 위한 기초 연구

A basic study of improving the in-service training program for the qualification of 1st grade secondary school English teachers

The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for developing an in-service training program for secondary school English teachers. To achieve this, this study focused its research upon the theory and survey of in-service training programs for the qualification of 1st grade secondary school English teachers. The survey was completed by 222 English teachers who had completed a session of in-service training. The questionnaire consisted of 33 questions. Analysis of the answers revealed the following results: 1) most participants thought they were lacking in their English communicative and teaching skills and the training course was not adequate for improving their skills in such a short time, 2) trainees assumed that the time for appointment as a trainee was appropriate, 3) most of them thought the duration (days and time) for the training was suitable, but a third thought the duration was too long, 4) a third of the trainees thought the number of subjects and the time allocated for the major categories was lacking, 5) they thought there was an absence of relationship- building time and the hierarchy among various in-service trainees for English teachers was a problem, 6) most of them thought the assessment of training imposed a severe burden on them. Based upon the above findings, it can be concluded from this study that in order to improve the efficiency of in-service training the following suggestions should be implemented: 1) the explicit definition of the nature of training is required and the training curriculum must be created according to the aims and nature of the training, 2) the courses for the training must be developed according to teachers’ grades of ranks and hierarchy, 3) the system of assessment for the trainees must be converted into a pass/fail system or an absolute evaluation system.
