6시그마 추진시 챔피언의 지원이 프로젝트 성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 탐색적 연구

An Exploratory Study of the Effects of Champion Support on Project Performance Implementing Six Sigma: Based on Intermediate Effects of Belts' Empowerment and Team Collaboration

본 연구는 6시그마 추진 시 챔피언의 지원이 벨트 권한위임과 프로젝트 팀 협력 및 프로젝트에 성과의 인과관계를 구조방정식 모형을 통해 실증적으로 분석하였다. 연구 자료의 결과에 의하면 챔피언의 지원은 벨트의 권한위임과 프로젝트 팀 협력에 정의 영향을 미치는 결과로 분석되었다. 한편, 프로젝트의 결과에 영향을 미치는 변수로는 프로젝트 팀 협력으로 나타났다. 벨트들의 권한위임은 프로젝트 성과에 직접적인 인과관계가 없는 것으로 귀결되었다. 연구모형과 더불어 대안모형의 분석도 제시되었는데 연구모형이 대안모형보다 모형 적합도 면에서 좋은 것으로 나타났다.

Upper management support and commitment are critical to implement successfully six sigma activities. A number of empirical and cases studies have been done to examine the effects of top management support on the success of six sigma implementation. Besides top management commitment, champions promoting and leading the deployment of six sigma should be directly and actively involved in six sigma implementation to ensure its success. This situation requires an examination of the effects of champion support on project performance for practitioners as well as researchers. This study attempts to propose and test a causal research model using an SEM (structural equation model) to determine whether there is a relationship between champion support and project performance based on the intermediate effects of belt empowerment and team collaboration. The subjects of the study comprised a total of 97 belts from manufacturing firms implementing six sigma. Empirical results show that champion support is positively related to belt empowerment and team collaboration. In addition, project performance of six sigma is positively related not to belt empowerment but to team collaboration. The results of the study imply that enhancing team collaboration would improve six sigma project performance.
