Korean EFL college students’ English learning motivation, willingness to communicate, and the use of English-only zone

This study aims to investigate how English learning motivation and willingness to communicate contribute to the use of English-only zone by college students in a Korean university. One-hundred and eighty five Korean EFL students participated in this survey study. Participants were asked to answer the questions regarding their perceived competence, English learning motivation, willingness to communicate inside (WTC Inside) and outside classroom (WTC Outside), and their current use of English Café. Through the analysis of data the followings were revealed: 1) learners’integrative motivation was more related to both WTC Inside and Outside rather than instrumental motivation; 2) there were no significant differences between two groups (users vs. non-users of English-only zone) with regard to learning motivation; 3) however, there were significant differences between the groups in terms of WTC. Learners with high WTC Inside used English-only zone more often and voluntarily than learners with moderate WTC Outside. Ways to enhance WTC of English learners and to promote more active use of English-only zone in a Korean university are discussed based on the findings.
